中国人女性のことば

2000 年の夏の終わりから秋にかけて、ベイエリアのサン・マイクロシステムズにインターンとして働いていた。そのころ、目の前のアパートの Adult Center という建物で ESL （English as a Second Language の略; 英語を第 2 外国語とする人たちのためクラス）にも通っていた。

そこでクラスメイトの中国人と 「アメリカについて」 話したときのこと。彼女は、旦那さんの仕事の都合でベイエリアに来たそうだが、驚いたことに中国にいたときから家族以外の男性と話したことがなかったらしい。

「そうなると私が初めて話した男なのか？」 と尋ねると 「Yes」。

彼女は曰うのだ、

「こちらの人たちは、いつでも金（マネー）、金という。株の話とか、いくら儲かったとか、これはいくらしたとか、中国では（少なくとも彼女の生まれ育った故郷では）そんな話はまったくしたことがなかった。」

今でもそのときの彼女の言ったことばは忘れられない。われわれは資本主義社会に生きている。日常の会話の中でお金の話が出てきても私は否定しないが、いつも彼女のことばが頭の中でリンクして思い起こされるのである。

中国の都市部では、2000 年当時と比較してもはや今では日本以上の資本主義社会になってることと思う。彼女との会話では確かに国やその制度が違えば、感じ方や生き方が違うのだというのを痛感したのだった。
