映画 『バベル (BABEL)』 (2006)

「重い。」この映画を観た後に誰もが持つ感想だろう。確かに重い映画だった。しかし私の場合はむしろ、普段からいつも自分の脳ミソで考えている要素がすべてこの映画の中に入っていて、かなり驚いた。このブログのカテゴリでいうと、IT、国際、医療と福祉、TOEIC （そもそも異国間のコミュニケーションに英語が必要だから英語を修得が有効である）と符合する。やはり世界には同じことを考えている人がいるものだ。頭の中で何を考えているかなんてすべてを相手に伝えるのは難しい。しかしこんな風に映画にできてしまうなんてこの映画を作った監督はタダものではないなと思う。

映画『BABEL』は相当な前提知識を要求される。ゆえにこれほどまでに観る者を選別する映画も珍しい。その割り切り度合いといったらハンパではない。ブラッドピットが出演していなかったら興行的にはまったく成功しなかったであろう。そして彼のカッコよさだけを目当てに映画館に足を運んだ人はガッカリしたに違いない（テイストは彼の出演した作品からいえば Seven Years in Tibet みたいなもんだ。彼は今回のこの映画で着実にキャリアを積んだ）。観る人によって面白い、つまらないといった評価はまっぷたつに割れるだろう。

この映画に含まれる要素というか、私が注目したい飲みながら語れるテーマとしては次のようなものがある。

私の日常の生活の中ではこの映画の映像が頭を交錯する。だから普段から私の頭の中はこんな映像でいっぱいになっている。

たとえば私はモロッコにはいったことはないが、エジプトの田舎の観光地とトルコの洞窟生活の村にはいったことがある。なので映画の中で描かれている土ぼこりをはじめとしたモロッコの舞台はだいたい想像がつく。トルコでは路上で倒れた奥さんをまったく見ず知らずの現地の人に助けてもらった経験もある。お礼でお金を差し出したが受け取ってもらえなかったあたりもこの映画で描かれている。

アメリカからメキシコへの越境、そして帰還は人生の中でも忘れられない。メキシコティファナへ出るのはこの映画のように超簡単である。しかし一歩踏み出すとそこは老後のリゾート地サンディエゴとまるで違う世界が広がっている。映画ではよく描かれている。そして帰還するときの入国審査。審査官の発するあの独特の威圧的オーラは、接したことがある人ならビビらずにはいられないだろう。そのときの焦燥感も映画ではよく描かれていると思う。

渡米する直前まで、仕事のプロジェクトで私自身は実は聴覚障がい者のためにモバイルインスタントメッセージのシステムを開発するつもりでシステムの提案をしていた。このプロジェクトはすでに一段落しており、初めから終わりまでプロジェクトのメンバーには仕事中は障がい者のためのシステムなんだということは一切話さなかったけれども。当然 FOMA の TV 電話は手話でのコミュニケーションに使えると想定していた。聴覚障がいを持つ人にとってケータイは生活必需品なんだということをこの映画でも示唆している（当然、日本がハイテク国家であることも）。

私が籍を置く会社の本社ビルは、東京の臨海副都心に近いところにある。高層ビルなので夜残業したり、夜食を買いに途中階にあるコンビニに買い物に行くと、レインボーブリッジをはじめ、東京の摩天楼が一望できた。そのときにふとエジプトトルコ（そしてインド）を思い出していた。映画の中でも東京の夜景が映し出された直後モロッコに飛ぶ。実に対照的である。

このように、いままでの経験とこの映画の映像はかなり部分でオーバーラップした。この映画には基本的に終わりがない。いや、あるではないか、と反論する方もいるだろう。確かに終わりらしいもの、そして事実として現実の世の中にあるものといえば米国は国家としてあらゆる手段を使って自国民を助けるということだろう。しかしこれは映画の結末ではなく、単に事実を描写したに過ぎない。この映画の舞台でいえば、モロッコ、日本、アメリカ、メキシコを例にとって描いた世界の現実への答えは、いまなお私の中で答えはでてこない。

さて、以下、「難問解いて年越すぞっ！　【BABEL】」（http://diary.jp.aol.com/zkwaf94g7krk/940.html）にあった素朴な疑問に答えてみる。

  • 日本に住んでる人がモロッコで猟？
    →私も不思議でしたが私の知らないような金持ちの設定なのでそんなもんかなと。金持ちの趣味だと思えば何でもアリでしょう。
  • 猟銃の国外持ち出し
    →現地で調達したか、仕事で貿易やってればできるかも。
  • 普通の奥さんだったら手に入るシロモンじゃない
    →こじつけですが、貿易関係で銃が手に入る環境にいたのでは。お金さえだせば日本でも拳銃は手に入ると思う。
  • 不法で働いてる人が絶対あんな気軽に国境を越えたりしないよね？
    →気軽に越えられます。出るときはスタンプ押さないから何の審査もないです。
  • 出るのは楽でも入るの大変
    →そう、入るのが大変です。だからあのドライバーのおっちゃんとナニーはあせってた。私があそこにいったときは夕方だったけど、あそこ（カリフォルニアとメキシコの間）の入国ゲートはクルマで 3時間待ちだった。

ちなみに、DVD からわかる Chieko (Rinko Kikuchi) から刑事への手紙はこんな感じ？

私は日本語がMOTHER TONGUEではないから、表現とか文法とか何かが間違ったら、あるいは失礼なことを言ったら申し訳ございません。

先映画を見た後、一番知りたいものの一つもチエコから刑事さんにくれた手紙です。日本語は少し読めるから、DVDをPAUSEしてなんとか内容を解読しようと思って、結局上のように書いたもの以外別に何も発見できませんでした。そしてネットに誰かがあの手紙の全文を分かるかもしれないと思って、GOOGLEでここについてしました。（ちなみにサーチワードは「母から愛され」でした）

簡単に探しただけですが、恐らくネットにあの手紙の内容解読するページはここしかないでしょう。英語のWIKIPEDIAのBABELの記事にも少しあるが、上にあるものの英訳に過ぎませんでした。しかも英訳された部分は上の方より少ないのです。

まあ、言いたいことはこれだけなら、わたしは恥を知らずに下手な日本語を使いみたいわけにはありません。（笑）

ただ、あなたが言ったとおり、「やはり世界には同じことを考えている人がいるものだ」と見て、本当に不思議だな～っと私もそう思いました。映画をもっと分かるようにここに来た。そしてあの文をよんで、こういう思いに駆けられた私が普通に使わない外国語（でもあなたにとっては国語ですね）を使って、見たこともない人とCOMMUNICATEしています。これはまさにこの映画のテーマのひとつですね。

あの手紙は適当だったのですか。米国のネットでの個人レビューとかでもみんな「なんて書いてあるんだ！」って不思議がっていましたよ。上のは、DVD を一時停止して書き留めたものです。なので意味がなんとなくしか取れないけどたぶん「母親との関わりについて、刑事さんと触れて気づいた」ことが書いてあったのではないかと思います。通信の秘密ってのもあるくらいだからあの手紙の内容を明かすのは禁じ手のような気もしますが、気になるものは気になる＾＾；

さて、メキシコの国境越えについては、不法就労の事実はパスポートだけからは特に判断つかないから、戻ってくるときも大丈夫でしょう。ただし後部座席に乗せていた子どもたちがいなければ、ということになります。今思うと10年以上不法滞在してたわけだからあのナニーのパスポートの期限も切れてた可能性が高いですね。ビザなし不法滞在ってだけで途中パスポート更新でメキシコに帰っていたとかいう可能性もあります。我々日本人には無理だけど国が陸続きでつながっているアメリカとメキシコでは可能なような気がします。って、映画なのにそんなこと考えるとキリがないですね。

おもしろかったです！

遅ればせながら私もやっと『バベル』を観ました。

私も断然『面白い！』と思った方でしたが、
オーストラリア人の旦那は『ブラピだから見たけどがっくり！』のタイプで
本当に真っ二つに分かれましたね～。
