サポートを考える。

日本人の感覚から言うとサポートなんてタダかと思うのに、アメリカに実際に住んで少しすると日本人は誰もが業種に関係なくサポートの悪さに驚くようだ。しかも、本当のサポートを受けようとするとタダではない。

例えば…

  1. 年金番号

    まずアメリカで生活するために取るのがこの番号であるが、番号が発行されたか電話をかけると 「あなたの待ち時間は約 21 分です」 などと教えてくる。私は日を分けて 10 回くらいかけただろうか？その中で一番短かったのは 「6 分」であった。電話越しにずっと待ってるわけである。でもこの行政サービス自体はタダだから仕方ない（しかし、当然電話代はかかっている）。

  2. 電話

    電話をつなぎたいと申し込んで、翌々営業日には開通しますよ。なんて言われたのに、その日になって開通しない。問い合わせてみると、どうも電話局からマンションまではつながったが、マンションの配線盤から部屋までつながってないようす（最初からそんなこと私が知る由がないです） 。それをつなげるために技術料 $150 請求された。確かに、契約するときに 「技術サポート入っとくか？」 とは言われた。$150 払っておけば、こういう状況のときにタダになるそうだ。大家に言ったらなんとかしてくれたが…

  3. クルマ

    TOYOTA で新車を買ったとき、3年間（だっけな？） 、壊れた部品がタダになるオプションがあるが、付けるか？と。$1,000（以上）払えば、機械的に故障したところなんかを修理するとき部品がタダになると。日本でもずっと TOYOTA のクルマを乗ってきたが、機械的に故障したことは一度もなかったし、「えっ？TOYOTA の新車なのにそんなに壊れるか？」 と思い、断った。これはコンピュータの世界で言えばアップルケアに近いサービスと言えるだろう。

  4. TV

    TV を買ったら、「$150 で 2 年間で修理サポート付けるか？」 と聞かれた。これは、どちらかというと量販店の 「安心保証」 に近いが、日本の量販店だともっと安いはず。これも、「TV なんてそう簡単に壊れるか？」 と思ったが、店員に 「もし壊れたら送料だってバカにならないよ」 と言われたのと、日本に売ってない特殊な方式の TV （リアプロ）だったので、これは付けることにした。ただし、このサポートは値切ってタダにしてもらったけど。確かに、本体だけで 60 キロはあるので、送料がすごくかかりそう。

…という、主だったあらゆる場面で高いサポート料を求められる。タダの場合は、こちらが多大な（時間的または実費）コストを払う仕組みになっている。アメリカだとこれは当たり前のようである。

同じアメリカの企業でもデルは 「 1 年間サポート無料」 なんて日本のメーカーじゃあたり前のことを全面に押し出して、さらに修理のときに 「引き取り（またはオンサイト修理）」 なんてもするのは、実はアメリカの他の企業では考えられないことだと思う。このサポートを武器にデルが伸びたは、理解できる気がする。実は、日本では当たり前のサービスをやってるだけなんだけどね。

日本の消費者の目は厳しく、メーカーは限りなく品質の高いものを出荷しようとするので、基本的に日本製のものは故障が少ないからサポートにももともと（アメリカのそれに比べ）それほどコストがかかっていないからタダにできる、ということが言えそうだ。品質の高いものを作れば当然販売価格が高くなってしまいそうだが、そこは、日本のメーカーは、技術革新によって、良いものを安く作れる技術を磨いて来たのだと思う。

話としては当たり前のようなことであるが、この当たり前のことをするのがなかなか難しいものなのだ。
