アメリカの独立記念日

7月4日は、アメリカの独立記念日。

2004/07/04 は日曜なので、5日も振替休日になっていたが、こちらの休日システムは (アメリカに来たばかりで) よくわからないので、会社の同僚に「月曜日は休みなんですか?」と聞いてみたところ、「たぶんそうじゃないか?」 (←たぶんって、おい・・)。彼に続けて言われたのが、

「それより、お前に 1つ『警告』しておく。週末にあちこちで爆発音が聞こえても、それは決してアメリカで『戦争』が始まったわけじゃないから。決してテロでもない。心配するな。」

週末は花火があると妻が楽しみにしていたので、すぐに彼なりのジョークだとわかったけど、この独立記念日、アメリカではみんな揃って祝っている (ちなみに、彼の言う「あちこちで」は本当で、このあたりは各市町村単位で花火をあげてたようである)。中でも、独立記念日の前には家の前に国旗を掲げていたり、クルマのラジオのアンテナに付けた国旗をなびかせてフリーウェイを疾走するクルマをみかけたり、いつもポップスしか流さないラジオでもアメリカの国家のポップス版とか有名なアーティストが歌ったやつとかが 1 日中流れていたりした。

さて、これを日本に置き換えたらどうだろう？星条旗は日の丸に、国家は君が代となる。日の丸をなびかせて走っているクルマをみかけたら (日本だと) 確実に「右翼」扱いだ。建国記念日にJ-WAVE でも「君が代」は流さないだろう。

この違いは、いったいなんなんだろう？と、考えさせられる。アメリカ国民というものは、日本人からするとみんな「右翼」になってしまう。(アメリカ人には) 「愛国心」はみんなにあるように見える。一方で日本は、逆にマスコミが騒いで、日の丸君が代に反対する教員のニュースとかを流したりする。日本人は愛国心が備わらないよう、もっと明確に指摘するなら、アメリカの属国のままでいるように、アメリカからコントロールされているのだと思う。

アメリカは確かでない情報をもとに他国に「干渉」しちゃう国である。国を滅ぼすくらいおせっかいなことするなら、日本にも、自分の国の価値観を強制して「もっと俺たちアメリカ人みたいに自分の国を大事にしろよ」と言って来てもよさそうなものだ。そのくらい独立記念日は盛り上がっていた。彼らにとって 7/4 は、自分たちの (日本で言う) 愛国心を再確認する日なのだろう。日本で、建国記念日はどうか？「(日本が建国した日なんて誰にもわからないから) 単に 2月は休みがないから、作ろう。。。」って感じだったのでは・・・
