日本人であるために。(1)
今からもう 23 年も前の話になるが、私が 7 歳 (小学 1 年生) のとき、父親と母親に連れられて佐渡島に旅行に行った。新潟から佐渡に渡るフェリーの中で、自分の名前をローマ字で刻印する記念メダルの機械をみつけた。そのメダルが欲しいとオヤジにせがんだ。そして、出来てきたメダルには、
YASUHIKO AOI
と打たれていた。当時のアオイヤスヒコ少年は、小学校 1 年生ですでにローマ字が読めたらしい。これを見た彼はオヤジに激怒。というか、泣き叫んだ。 「ボクはヤスヒコアオイなんかじゃなーーい、アオイヤスヒコだ！！」 とダダをこねたのだった (このことは後々大きくなってからも何度も言われたのできっとオヤジもまだ覚えていると思う)。
そのときオヤジは、ローマ字では 「ヤスヒコアオイ」 が正しいのだ、と彼に言い聞かせた。が、小学校1 年生の彼にそんなことがわかり得るはずもない。そのときはずいぶん、オヤジを困ったことだろう。あの抵抗の仕方は尋常じゃなかったように思う。
その後、少しずつ大きくなるにつれ、ローマ字表記のときは名前が先に来て、姓が後にくる、というのを自然に覚えていったように思う。少なくとも、中学校の授業で英語を習い始めてから、疑いなくローマ字表記は 「YASUHIKO AOI 」 だと信じこんでいた。しかし、あのフェリーの出来事から 23 年後、、、今になってみて、当時のヤスヒコ少年はやはり正しかったのだと思うようになった。日本人なのだから、ローマ字で表記したって 「アオイヤスヒコ」 は 「AOI YASUHIKO」 なのだ。思い起こせば、私が中学・高校と 6 年間英語の授業を受けてきて、ずっと疑いなく 「YASUHIKO AOI」 が正しいと思っていた、っていうかついこの間まで、それを信じて疑わなかったのだ。
6 年間の英語の授業の中では、何人かの英語教師に出会った。高校3 年生のときだったか、隅谷という教師がいて(ちょっとお気に入りの先生だった)、この先生はニュージーランドにしばらくの間いたことがあるらしく、授業中にしばしば (英語を話す) 外国人に名前を名乗るときは、姓、名の順でいいんだと言っていた。このときは、私も外国人と接したことがなく、この教師は何を言っているのだろう？と、彼の言う話自体が信じられなかった。しかしながらとにかく、日本人がローマ字で名乗るときは姓＋名で良いのだ、と思えるようになったのは、何を隠そう去年の秋からである。そのことが正しいように思うようになったのは、いくつかの理由がある。
まず第 1 に衝撃を受けたのは、いつの号だったか忘れたが、雑誌 SAPIO の記事だった。 「日本人なら姓＋名で名乗れば良い。わざわざ、英語流に名＋姓で名乗る必要はない。世界に誇る日本の文豪夏目漱石は、海外では SOUSEKI NATSUME にはならない。夏目漱石はやはり海外でも NATUME SOUSEKI だ」
…このような記事が載っていた。もう、私にとってはまさに目からウロコだった。SAPIO はかなり右よりの雑誌で、ことあるごとに 「日本人としての誇りを持とう」 と言ってくる。SAPIO は隔週発刊だから、その論調を 2 週間に 1 度読んでいると、今は洗脳されて───すなわち SAPIO 流に言うと、逆にサヨクからの洗脳が解けて───そのことが疑いなく叩き込まれてしまっている自分に気づく。しかしながら、これは以下に述べる第 2 の理由と密接な関係がある。
その第 2 の理由とは、インド人と仕事をしていて、だ。
インド人から名刺をもらっても、そして、現在毎日のようにインド人と仕事でメールのやりとりをしていても、相手のメールに書かれているのが名前なのか姓なのか、実は今もわからない(苦笑)。実際には、あらかじめどう呼んだらいいのか会社の同僚や本人から聞いているから、相手をどう呼ぶかなんてことには困らない。しかしもう彼らと仕事をしてから何ヶ月も経っているので、 「実はあなたが名乗っているのは姓なのか名前なのか」 なんて聞くに聞けない。姓か名かわからないのは他にもタイとかアジアの国々にもあてはまる。
第 3 に、日本人はアジアのリーダーを呼ぶときに江沢民とか金正日とかそのままで呼んでいる。
にも関わらず、欧米人に対しては KEIZO OBUCHI とか呼んで欲しいのだろうか。これは、日本人が欧米人の文化に 「合わせた」 ということだろう。ヤツらにわかりやすいように、 「合わせてやっている」 という表現は、どう考えても正しくはないだろう。確かに、日本は戦争に負けたかもしれないがなぜ、欧米人にこびる必要があるのか。先のインド人と仕事をしていて、彼らは私たち日本人を呼ぶときに AOI-san とか、こちらから教えてもいないのに 「さん」 付けで呼んでくれる。きっとどこかで学んだのだろう。インド人と初対面で名刺を私て次回から AOI-san とか呼ばれるとちょっとだけ嬉しい気分になる(というか、いきなり言われると驚く)。
ちなみに今はこちらも相手のことを Dakshin-san とか呼んでいる。私の仕事におけるインド人と日本人両者の間には、こちらがシステムの設計書を書いてインド人にお金を払ってプログラムを書いてもらっている、という関係がある。会社としては、インドの会社はパートナーとみているので決してそんなことはないのだが、実際問題として、やはりお金を払っている側は 「お客さま」 なのだろう。お客さまのことをよく知り、サービスを尽くすというのは当然のことなのかも知れない。
もっと言うと、1998 年に一緒に仕事をしていたテキサス州ダラスにあるベンチャー企業に行ったときも、向こうのメンバーは Yas-san と 「san」 付けだった。今まで仕事をしていて、よく考えてみると Mr. AOI とか呼ばれたことはない。 Mr.で呼ばれるのは、日本人同士で英語の会話をしているときくらいのように思う。最近のアメリカ人は日本の文化を知っているのだ。というか、 「さん」 付けは日本では常識なのだから、経済大国である日本のこれくらいの習慣を外国人が知っていてもおかしくはない。私たちが英語での敬称を Mr. / Ms. というのを知っているのと同じだ。
そして最後に、飛行機に乗っていていると、行き先の入国カードが渡されることがあり、これには、姓＋名で書くようになっていることが非常に多い。国際的には、姓＋名で表現する場合が多くなっている…とどこかで聞いたこともあるような気がする。
しかしながらそうは言っても、姓＋名になる理由を並べてみたところで、何しろパスポートやクレジットカードは名＋姓の順である。クレジットカードの表記が名＋姓で気に入らないならつくらなければいいだけの話だが (しかし実際には作らないわけにはいかないし、名＋姓にしないと作ってくれない)、外務省が発行するパスポートはそうはいかない。おそらく、私たちがインドやアジアの国、すなわち欧米と違って文化がまるで違う国にいったときに名前なのか姓なのかよくわからないように、逆の立場からすれば日本人の姓＋名の順番を知らない人も多いはずだ。というか、よほど学のある人と話さない限り普通知らないんじゃないかと思う。
そんなわけでつまるところ、私の結論としては、実は姓＋名を全面に主張するのではなくて、 「相手に呼ばれたいように名乗ればよい」 である。名前とは、相手とコミュニケーションを図るための最も基本的な要素だから、それが円滑に行きさえすれば良いように思う。公的な文書に書かれている名前だとしても、相手が日本のことをよほど詳しく知らない限り、どちらが先にきても自分が自分であることを相手に識別させることができればいいのであるからだ。
例えば私に関して言えば、自分のメールアドレスがなぜ yas かと言うと、高校時代までのあだ名が 「ヤス」 だったから…というのもあるが、なにより 「AOI」 は母音が3 つも重なるため、英語のネイティブスピーカーにとって、AOI とは非常に言いづらい言葉だからなのである。っていうか、[oi] などの 2 重母音はあるものの 3 重母音は英語にはないため、基本的にネイティブは 「アオイ」 とそのまま言うことができない。ではどのように発音するかというと、[Ayoi] (アヨ～イ;ヨにアクセント)、もう少しましだと [Awoi] (アゥオ～イ;オにアクセント) なんかになてしまうのである。こちらがいくら 「アオイ」 と発音してみせても、絶対に言うことができないのだ。
これは、ネイティブはトウキョウやキョウトを発音できないのと同じである。彼らには、[kyo] という発音がなため、どうしてもトキヨゥ [tokio / tokiyo] (トにアクセント) またはキヨト [kiyoto] (ヨにアクセント] になってしまう。
だから、yas にしている。yas なら発音できるのだ。インド人も Dear Yas-san, と毎日のようにメールを書いてくる(ただしインド人は、ちゃんとアオイと発音できた…)。
私はこのブログが、メールアドレスの From: の欄に名＋姓でローマ字表記している何人かの人たちに読まれているを知っている。だから今回 「姓＋名」 の順番のことを言うのはちょっと気がひけることでもあったのだが、ほとんどの日本人は学校で姓＋名でなく名＋姓の教育を受けており、常識的にはこちらが広く使われているはずである。
しかし、私の自分の子どもがもしコトバをしゃべれるのなら私はそのようには教育しない。自分のオヤジとは違って、子どもが純粋な気持ちで 「ボクはアオイ○○だ」 「アオイ××だ!」 と主張したら、それは正しいと思うだろう。…そんわけで、このブログは私の独り言と思って勘弁して欲しい。
女性に関しては、結婚すると日本ではフツーは姓が変わるシステムになっているので、なっているので、自分のアイデンティティを表すために名＋姓でも良いような気もする。
最後に、もう一度見返して欲しい。記念のメダルに、

と打たれていたこと。これは正しいか？それは、今回のテーマであった。私は、自分なりの考えに到達したが、ぜひご自身で判断してみて欲しい。自分たちの後世にはどのように教育すべきなのか考えてみて欲しい。このような細かいことひとつひとつが、日本人が世界から (特に、アメリカから指図を受けずに) 自律していけるかどうかの重要なポイントになると思う。実は、姓＋名の順序なんてどちらが正しいかの問題ではないのかも知れないが、何の疑いなく、われわれが受けて来た教育は、現在我が青春を謳歌しているアメリカによるアメリカ崇拝のプロパガンダかも知れないのだ、そして多くの日本人はそのことに気づかなければならないときが来たのかも知れないのだ。
