日本人であるために。(2)

日本人は、もっともっと外国人に対して誇りを持つべきだと思う。日本人が、外国人とビジネスをしたりコミュニケーションを図るために必要なことはなんだろうか？

私は、以下の2つに集約されると思う。

  • 日本人としてのプライドを持つこと。
  • 英語に関しては自信を持つこと。

日本人としてのプライドを持つことの手始めは、自分の国の歴史や文化をもっと深く知ることだと思う。

「まずは相手の国の歴史や文化を知ること」 と答える人もいると思うが、私の意見は逆である。確かに、「郷に入っては郷に従え」のことわざの通り、相手の国の文化やマナーなどを知ることは大切である。外国のちょっとした文化を知らなかったがために、命取りになることだってあるだろう。しかし、相手のことをいくら深く知ろうと思っても、それを知るには本やインターネットに情報があふれているから、実はそれ以上は実際に相手とのコミュニケーションの中で学んでいくしかなくなる。それよりも私は、お互いの文化を教えあった方が良いと思うのだ。「私の国ではこうですが、あなたの国ではこのような場合どうしますか？」 これでいいじゃないか。日本人は、良く言えばサービス精神が旺盛な国民性ので、相手のことを事前に丹念に調べてから臨もうとする。しかし、自分の国のことも知らないで、逆に相手から「日本の文化では、○○ですよね？」なんて言われて、外国人の方がよく知っていた、なんてことになる方が恥ずかしいのではないだろうか。

私の経験から言うと、外国人は日本の観光地として京都を訪れることになっているので（＜？）、結構、日本の古い歴史なんかには (というか、京都を) 知っている場合が多い。私自身も京都には 2 回しか行ったことがないし、日本の文化にはだいぶ背を向けて生きてきたので、外国人に日本の文化のことを言われてちょっと焦ることが今までにあったように思う。そんなことがないように、特に日本の歴史は大切だと感じている。

日本は単一民族で 2000 年以上の歴史を持つ世界にも異色な国なのだ。島国ということもあって他の民族に一度も侵略されたことがなく、今日にいたっている。侵略されたことはないが、漢字を筆頭に外国の文化をうまい具合に自分の文化に吸収できる日本人。そして、現在、最先端の技術を持つ日本。まずはそのことに誇りを持ちたいと思う。

去年の夏、インド人と昼飯を食っていて、何を話せば良いかと話題に困った。インドのことはいろいろ質問したし、今度は自分たちのことを話す番だとそのとき思った。相手のインド人は日本に来たことがないから、日本がどのような国か見当もつかないだろう。そこで、日本の時事問題に触れた。たとえば、そこで思いついたのが日本のバブル崩壊後の不況、高齢化社会、臓器移植、クローン牛についての話題であった。(SONYの VAIO ノート (薄いやつ) はすでに打ち合わせのときに見せていたので昼飯では話さなかった)。このうち、インド人相手に話していて痛感したことはやはり自分は日本についてよく知らないんだ、ということだった。確かに、インドにいながら臓器移植やクローン技術など最先端の技術なんかを話しているときは、自分で話しながらも日本ってすごい国だな、なんて思ってしまうのだが、それよりももっと大切なこと、すなわち、それら技術が生まれてきたり支えてきた日本の歴史とか文化についての見識が薄いことに気づいたのだった (ちなみにクローン牛に至っては私の英語力のなさからか相手は理解できなかったようだ。プログラム開発の仕事でもクローンってでてくるでしょ、って言ったのに…)。

日本には、技術よりも、もっと伝統的なこと、長い歴史のなかで経験したもっと深いものがあるはずで、そういうことももっとよく知らなければならないと感じた。
